One of the Home Counties, Kent borders Greater London, Surrey, East Sussex and Essex. The main towns are the Maidstone (the county town), Folkestone, Rochester, Ashford, Sevenoaks, Medway, Dartford, Gravesham, Tonbridge and Malling, Tunbridge Wells, Swale, Shepway and Thanet, as well as the city of Canterbury.
Kent includes the point at which England borders France - halfway along the Channel Tunnel. On a clear day, French coastline is visible from Folkestone. The county is also famous for the White Cliffs of Dover, inspiration for the song by Dame Vera Lynn.
As the closest part of the United Kingdom to mainland Europe, Kent has been heavily involved in Britain's long history of international conflicts. English ships have set sail from ports in the county for over 800 years and the area towards the East was known as 'Hell Fire Corner' during the Battle of Britain in World War II, due to the heavy attacks that it received.
As it is home to many hop gardens and orchards, Kent is sometimes nicknamed 'The Garden of England' and this a title that the county often uses to promote itself for tourism. Other major industries include aircraft construction, agriculture, papermaking and cement production. However, as it is part of the 'Commuter Belt', many residents work in London.
